Religious Truth

Religion seems like a great concept, but it is also the reason for many wars. I’ve been contemplating this a lot lately. In today’s society we tend to only pay attention to what is right in front of us. We only know of certain religions based on our region. We don’t even question what else there is. And why are there so many? Why is your belief the right one?

Science has shown that you can teach a child to believe anything and they will. Each baby is a blank slate. Think of this child as a brand new computer. Then you add a program. What type of parents are raising the child. Add another program. What type of culture. Add another program. What type of diet. Add another program and on and on. Environment shapes our core beliefs, and our brains are computers. So, where does are beliefs match up with science and logic? We use a lot of words to explain our beliefs, but what do we really know?

I grew up with certain beliefs. I was raised with a mixture of Catholicism and Pagan beliefs. As an adult I wanted to know why. How did those two belief systems crossover. Well, for me, all religions crossover. It’s about your perspective. The hard part is people get very defensive when it comes to religion. It is very difficult for people to debate without arguing. We let our emotions rule us over our logic. Because logically, if you are confident in your beliefs you wouldn’t feel the need to lash out at someone who questions it. Unfortunately, that’s the human mindset anymore.

You see it everywhere. From the people close to you, to the people in government, to famous people. People are so quick to anger. So quick to make comments of putting the other down. Which does what? It changes the conversation from being productive to attacking. It’s like in our minds we are so focused on being judged that we immediately jump to judging others. Then nothing changes because we are unwilling to be open to truth. And that habit, adds another program. Who’s teaching the kids to actually listen to each other and respond productively. Collaboration is how a society can come together, but we must first learn to effectively communicate without trying to pass our own judgements unto others. Judge not lest you be judged.

If we have any hope for a productive society, we need to be able to face our own truths. What do you believe? And what do you know? Re-study your religious beliefs. Do it with an open mindset. What is being said? Who wrote it? What do other cultures believe and why? It doesn’t have to be to change your beliefs. If anything it will help you see someone else’s perspective. Therefore you can communicate with them on a different level than attacking. Attacking someone has never truly changed someone. You can beat them down enough into submission, but that’s not true change. Change comes from effective communication. From being able to speak to someone and keep them engaged in active listening. We must first focus on what words we are using and the tone. Therefore , we must first work on ourselves. What are we contributing to the conversation?

I think we need to learn there’s a difference between religion and spirituality. We can all come together and find a common ground. We don’t have to fight each other. We can learn to effectively communicate. We just might find out we have more in common than we realize.
