Algorithms and Mental Health

When I was young, we didn’t have a computer in the house. Or cell phones. A beeper was the cool thing in high school. Most of you today probably don’t even know what a beeper is. It’s funny, I hear my age in my words, but they are true, nonetheless. My parents had a different reality they lived in. I always remember a TV in our home. It may have been different then the televisions we see today, but I always remember it in the background of my memories. But for my parents, their childhoods were different. They saw when televisions became a thing, and everyone wanted to have one. Technology is constantly changing and evolving. With that comes the good and the bad.

We all seem to be carrying computers around with us daily. Our cellphones give us direct access to all the information we could possibly ask for. But do we realize the access it gives the creators of those products. We so quickly click through the agreements not fully reading or comprehending what it is we are agreeing to. We simply want the quick gratification we are so used to. It’s embedded in us. It’s that ADHD brain kicking in, hurry-hurry I’m not wasting time, got to rush. We’ve been clicking our way through so many screens we find it difficult to pause. Let alone sit with our own thoughts and emotions.

We now have algorithms to be warry of. Our computers are trained to respond to what you are interested in. That is great from one aspect. I like to see what I am interested in. Show me more of the feel good and inspiring, but if we pause too long on a negative clip, the algorithm says this is what they like, feed them more. Give the people what they want. It’s not human. It doesn’t know what you need as human being with real flesh and bones. It’s just here to say here’s more of what you are interested in. Now add on top of that the fact that some people have an agenda. They rely on you living in a state of fear, a state of unrest. In these days you can buy “likes” and “followers”. They may not be real, but it will appear real to real people. There are so many AI accounts it’s difficult to tell if it’s a real person or a generated one. We look at people’s followers and assume that number is true. We think we shared a post and whatever the number that is displayed back to us for our views we assume is true. But truly, we know only what the computer is telling us. We know nothing. That may be terrifying but at the same time it’s liberating. Because who cares. Be you. Share your thoughts. Share your experiences and express yourself fully. Because you’re watching. You are watching you live out your existence. Give yourself the best show, and live your existence beautifully, and those meant for you will find you.

Don’t fall for the rage baits and those grasping for attention. Don’t feed the energy of anger and fear. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone but yourself. This is your time. Your life. Start a journal. A real pad of paper with your own human handwriting. Write down every good thing that has happened in your life. Every feel-good moment and add to it. Create something physical to remind yourself of those feelings. When we dwell on the negative that energy becomes our prime focus of belief. To get out of those negative emotions we need to start by reminding ourselves of the positive until that becomes our pattern. Our minds are complicated, but they are reprogrammable. Don’t let the algorithms control you. Use them for your benefit. If you don’t like what you see, pause and think of what you want to see. Then search it and pause on those videos. It’s that simple. The more you do this the more the algorithm will grow with you. Learn to find balance between technology and nature. You will need both to survive this world. Good luck to you!

May we all learn to enjoy this experience and not fear it. Be the energy that is needed in this world. Be the love!
